MAKING PERSONAL FINANCE PERSONAL
I graduated law school in June 2015. I had landed my dream job at a prestigious law firm, but found myself with $215,000 of debt. You read that right . . . $215,000. About 90% of my debt was from law school. I was overwhelmed with the massive debt I had accumulated, so I went where any millennial would go – the Internet. There I found book recommendations, YouTube videos, podcasts, blogs, you name it. I was drawn to content created by women, particularly women of color, because I found that their stories and journeys resonated with me. I became inspired to create a plan to take control of my finances and began my financial freedom journey in January 2016.
Most of those that I was following on social media had feeds capturing them living their best lives. I was however curious about how they were able to afford their latest trip or brand new car, how they managed their recent pay increase, whether they were investing, or how much debt they had. I began posting about money topics – everything from saving to investing to retirement – on my personal social media page. The feedback from my family and friends was instant. They wanted to learn more.
In August 2018 I launched my Instagram account @zerobasedbudget to document my debt free journey and to share financial tidbits intended to simplify personal finance concepts. That account led to this page and starting my business, Zero-Based Budget Coaching LLC. At ZBBC, I provide personal finance coaching services to individuals and couples and speak to audiences small and large about all things money.
100% DEBT FREE
Exactly 48 months after starting my debt free journey, I became 100% DEBT FREE!!! I am so thankful to my family, friends, and to my ZBB Fam for encouraging me along the way. I hope that my page and story inspire you to take control of your finances, no matter where you are on your journey.
